Queen
St in Brisbane CBD is a predominantly retail based area. This presents numerous
issues which must be addressed for a future context. The Myer Centre, a
shopping mall adjacent to Queen St, is a large part of CBD retail which needs
to be improved to adapt to the dynamic conditions of future retail. Acknowledging the tension between physical
retail and virtual/ online shopping is necessary to understand how to maximise
site value and use while providing users with a beneficial experience. By
injecting new uses into the precinct, enhanced site use and experience can
improve economic, social and environmental factors. This proposal has
re-developed a section of the Myer Centre by introducing new mixed uses of
retail, hospitality, public space, transport and residential.
Hi Michael
ReplyDeleteYou did well, that's no question. You have to understand that in few minutes first impression comments - critique often we express first we see, or what particularly "catch our attention" (hopefully not big mistakes"). Often is idea rather to highlight places in project that require improvement, than just applaud and say only good thinks.
Generally you did correct project (maybe no so seriously exploring possible future as result of eventual changes). Maybe I had to high expectations knowing your ability, but in general proposed "intervention" in town is definitely improvement.Few bullet points as brief comment:
-you have to use wisely your 10 minutes and say the most important and show key elements. It is sometimes impossible put 4 months work in 10 minutes, particularly on complex project. Obviously your Blog helps very much.
-Ground and lower levels (retail) you did really only very schematic and apartments are for concept design quite well organized. I exacted that lower level you will address like upper levels and "show real power of public openness and activities".
Your model was too small. You definitely have to be the best "judge" what is the best tools and scale for your presentation.
-Yes you mentioned solar panels on roof, water collection etc expressing sustainability and approach, but I hope you understand that is much, much more than that, including orientation, construction efficiency, energy consumption, materials (if possible locals) used and local trades etc. etc.
-I hope you agree that Shopping center "design" is really very, very basic and is quite difficult recognize any "futuristic" approach rather than redesign existing with similar approach (my opinion).
-I am glade that you put serious attention to building details and you showed it through some sectional details quite well.
-I was the most impressed with your simple clear and very eloquent graphic conceptual development composition incorporating very basic blocks (with colors) but very well explaining how "composition work", particularly important to understand "section" of your proposal.
-You have interesting 3D images, but I found that 3D context images are really missing (only two). Probably that's "enough" to build impression, but real "experience" walking along street or view from hart of your project "out" etc. etc.
-Steps are dominant landscaping element in your concept performing as part of internal street and vertical communication and in same time space for public meetings, performances etc. That approach can be quite good and interesting, but you really did not give us "your impression with possible activities rather than told us that it can be done". Impression is that is very unfriendly for people with disability, parents with small kids etc. etc. I suppose always exist "possibility" to combine it and achieve what you want.
-You have relay very good Blog. I strongly encourage to use this as your "project storage and your sketch book " as collection of materials and place where is "spirit of your project".
It was real pleasure work with you this semester and I hope sometimes in future we will have opportunity to collaborate too.
Regards,
